The San Francisco Bay Area and the
Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta
This delta area is about 1,100 square miles, and is located just east of the San Francisco bay. (See the page titled: Area Description.)
It's critical that this fresh-water inland delta be protected from being flooded by salty ocean water. Why? Because Fresh water for about 25 million people in southern and central California flows through this delta.
Carquinez Strait in Perspective
The Carquinez Strait is the point where a storm barrier can be constructed, protecting entire inland delta from being flooded by salt water that would result of a California Super Storm and/or from the consequences of a 6.7 or higher earthquake in or near San Francisco.
Delta Area Photos
For dozens of additional excellent photos of the delta area, readers are directed to: http://www.water.ca.gov/newsroom/photo/delta.cfm.
This is where the Sacramento - San Joaquin River Delta (top of the picture) empties into (San Pablo Bay) the north end of the San Francisco Bay (bottom of the picture).
The span across the strait is slightly over 3,000 feet. If a flood barrier existed near this bridge and a major earthquake or a severe winter storm caused the levees to fail, this storm barrier could close its gates. This would prevent salty ocean water from rushing into the delta area like a tsunami wave and not only flooding the delta with salt water, but also causing billions of dollars in property damage, killing thousands of people, destroying a huge highly productive farming area, and producing an ecological disaster.
Even with the gates closed, much of the delta would still flood, but it would flood much more slowly, not all areas would be flooded, and it would flood with fresh clean river water. The damage would be far less severe and much easier to repair than if it were flooded with water from San Francisco Bay. The repair-time would also be much shorter. And the major benefit, fresh water for 25 million people and thousands of farms is Central and Southern California would continue uninterrupted.
See the image below of the Thames River Barrier protecting London, England from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges.
Down River from London, England
Thames River Flood Barrier Downstream from Central London.
The purpose of this barrier is to prevent London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the sea. A flood barrier (similar in intent, but not necessarily in design) will be built in the Carquinez strait between the Sacramento and the San Joaquin River Delta area and the northern end of the San Francisco Bay. The London storm barrier is shown here simply to demonstrate the possibilities that are available. The actual design of the CAHR Foundation's flood-control barrier will be the latest and the best that present-day technology can create. See the above picture titled: Carquinez Strait.
